Gijón is one of the 10 Spanish cities that the govenment has named “City of Science and Innovation.” The calendar of scientific meetings backs the city’s new title.

Highlights on the 2011 agenda include: ISMANAM 2011 (18th International Symposium on Metastable, Amorphous and Nanostructured Materials), the Feed Quality and Safety Workshop, the 1st Workshop on Mcphase, and the Gemini 4th General Meeting. Among those secured for 2012 is the 11th European Workshop on Laser Ablation

The strong points of Gijón’s candidature as a City of Science and Innovation were its Science and Technology Park’s long history, the close collaboration between the University Campus research groups and the city’s technology based companies, and the configuration of the space known as the “Mile of Knowledge” where the R+D Centre of the Thyssen Group and “Laboral”, City of Science and Culture are located. The latter plays a dual role, as a venue for ultramodern art creation and it’s one of the most unique venues in the North of Spain.
